Most of the time we shoot forest streams by either pointing the camera downstream or upstream. This makes a lot of sense since the stream forms a line for the eye to follow. However, as we said last week, these images can get repetitive. Rather than just point the camera, as we said many times before, look for interesting foreground elements to add interest. How about a log or some rocks that form a strong foreground?

These foregrounds attract the eye and help to create depth. They add interest. They help pull your eye back once you have followed the stream. In this way the eye moves back and forth in the image. This is what we want rather than having people's eyes' moving just laterally. Another technique is to use a side wall to create the same effect:

Be sure to add something of interest, something to draw the eye.
